At its heart, the Divine is love, compassion, and justice. Mission, then, isn’t something we merely invent, own, or manage. It’s the boundless outpouring of Divine love into the world. We don’t so much have a mission as the Divine mission has us. Our deepest calling is to join with God, to become living channels of that love, compassion, and justice, allowing our ordinary lives to become places where Divine presence shines through.
This truth was beautifully expressed by St. Teresa of Avila, who gently reminded us that we are the eyes, the feet, and the hands through which Divine compassion tenderly embraces the world. In our humanity, we become vessels of God’s presence and generosity. The life and ministry of Jesus made Divine love visible, tangible, and wonderfully concrete. Those who encountered him found a new experience of God. He didn’t preach an institution, nor simply a religion, nor even himself. He proclaimed the Kingdom, the gentle Reign of God—a vision of humanity made whole through love, mercy, inclusion, and justice.
Jesus’ mission was to help people truly see the world through God’s eyes. He revealed a God whose heart was profoundly turned towards the poor, the wounded, the excluded, and the forgotten. In the same way, we too are called to reveal the God of love and compassion already dwelling deeply within our own hearts. When people encounter us, may they sense something of the Divine in and through us: a presence that heals, welcomes, uplifts, and restores.
We were created from love, by love, to love. Whenever we live in love, the Divine becomes vibrantly alive in us and can gently touch others through us. When our hearts ache for the suffering of others, that is God’s own heart beating within us. When we long to see others joyful, it is through our eyes that God sees. When we reach out to ease another’s burden, our hands become instruments of Divine tenderness.
Our journey is to become transparent to the Divine light we carry. Brother Roger of Taizé reminded us that the more we live in this transparency, the more we become a wellspring of peace for those around us. Hafiz expressed the same truth with beautiful simplicity: we are like openings in the flute through which God’s breath moves. Our mission is to become such instruments, through whom God’s music of love, compassion, and peace is played. The world is waiting for our music, the unique song only we can sing.
Our life’s deepest purpose is to embody the loving, compassionate, just, and inclusive presence of the Divine to all who encounter us. To experience and express the radiant presence of God. To speak so loudly with our hearts that words become increasingly unnecessary. This is the deepest praise, the truest worship, the prayer God asks of us: to live with love and compassion.
Our lives become our practice.
